Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Clovis Hugues (1851–1907) was a French poet, journalist, dramatist, novelist, and socialist activist whose arresting presence here is captured in a carte-de-visite albumen print by Étienne Carjat & Cie, at the studio's 10, rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette address in Paris. Carjat occupied that address from 1869 through 1884. The reverse carries the printed imprint of Nadar's studio rather than Carjat's, indicating the mount was reused or exchanged, a known occurrence among Paris studios of the period; the Carjat imprint appears on the front of the card.

Hugues is shown in a close bust-length oval vignette, wearing a dark double-breasted military-style tunic with large round buttons at the breast and epaulette-like shoulder detailing. His full, well-groomed beard and thick dark hair are distinctive, and his gaze is directed slightly above the camera with a composed, self-assured expression. The portrait is unencumbered by props or studio backdrop, consistent with Carjat's approach of producing portraits distinguished by the absence of elaborate ornamentation.

For articles favorable to the Paris Commune published in Marseille papers, Hugues was condemned in 1871 to three years' imprisonment. In 1881, the journalist, poet, and Freemason, elected by the working-class quarter of Belle-de-Mai in Marseille, became the first socialist deputy in the National Assembly. He frequented the household of Victor Hugo, who had encouraged his early poetry and praised his collection *Poèmes de prison* (1875) as revealing genuine talent.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil at the top: "Clovis Hugues / Poet, socialist, activist 1851–1907." The Nadar studio imprint reads "Médaille d'Or, Exposition Universelle 1878 / Rue d'Anjou St. Honoré, 51 / Paris" (Gold Medal, Universal Exhibition 1878 / 51 Rue d'Anjou St. Honoré / Paris), with additional notations in pencil: "8/06/10," "LOBDE1," and "Eb." The front of the card bears the printed imprint "Etienne Carjat & Cie Phot. / 10, Rue Ntre. De. de Lorette," with the subject's name inscribed in ink script below: "Johannod" (a secondary inscription of uncertain attribution).
