Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A liveried servant identified on the reverse as "Williams" is depicted in this hand-colored CDV, produced in the carte-de-visite format popular throughout the 1860s and 1880s. The vibrant applied coloring renders the image in the manner of a portrait miniature, a presentation suggesting the subject held personal or household significance to whoever commissioned or retained the card. No photographer's imprint appears on the mount.

The subject stands at full length before a painted studio backdrop and a fluted column prop, wearing a long blue livery coat with a bold red collar and gilt buttons, yellow-and-black striped hose, and low black shoes. He carries a tall halberd with a crimson shaft, and wears an ornate plumed helmet bearing a central medallion, conveying a ceremonial or theatrical character to the ensemble.

The costume's combination of polearm, decorative helmet, and formal livery coat is consistent with the dress of a ceremonial state or household official, a doorkeeper, or a theatrical porter character, each of whom employed the halberd as a badge of office well into the Victorian period. The meticulous hand-coloring, applied across the entire surface including the background, represents considerable additional expense beyond a standard CDV and underscores the image's intended decorative or commemorative purpose.

Inscribed in pencil on the reverse: "Servants of 'Williams'" (identifying the subject's name or household association).
