Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A Papal Swiss Guard depicted in a fully hand-colored carte de visite, produced by R. Falcetti e C. of Rome, active at Piazza di Spagna, 9, ground floor. The image is not a conventional photographic portrait but rather a painted illustration mounted on standard CDV card stock, a format widely produced by Roman studios as souvenir trade cards during the Grand Tour era of the 1860s and 1870s. The Pontifical Swiss Guard, maintained by the Holy See to protect the Pope and the Apostolic Palace, was established in 1506 under Pope Julius II and is among the oldest military units in continuous operation.

The guardsman stands at full length against a painted backdrop featuring a Roman archway and, at right, the unmistakable dome of St. Peter's Basilica. He wears the traditional striped Renaissance uniform in yellow, red, and black with puffed shoulders and vertical slashing, a broad leather belt with a silver buckle, white gloves, and a tall white plumed morion helmet. He holds an upright halberd in his right hand, and a blue-trimmed red object rests at his feet.

The Swiss Guard uniform is Renaissance in style, and its colors are those of the Medici coat of arms in honor of Clement VII. Cards of this type were produced in quantity by Roman photographers and print dealers for tourist purchase, making them characteristic souvenirs of the papal capital in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The reverse bears the studio imprint of R. Falcetti e C., Roma, Piazza di Spagna, 9, Pianterreno, printed in purple script. Inscribed in pencil in a later hand at the top of the reverse: "Swiss Gunard" (an apparent phonetic misspelling of "Guard").
