Four Kiowa men pose in a studio group portrait made by Goehner & Co. Art Gallery at the corner of Larimer and 15th Streets in Denver, placing this image firmly in the post-Civil War era when Kiowa delegations occasionally traveled to Colorado. Two men are seated in the foreground and two stand behind them, all facing the camera with composed, direct expressions. The figure at front left, identified on the reverse as White Bear, wears long braided hair, a fringed and beaded shirt, a wide leather belt, and a row of large disc ornaments descending from his lap.

The standing figure at right wears a military-style frock coat with shoulder insignia and carries what appears to be a pipe or ceremonial object, with a large gorget medal hanging at his chest. The standing figure at left is draped in a blanket and wears a wide-brimmed hat with a feather, while the fourth man wears a flat-topped hat bearing a decorative badge or insignia. Each subject displays a distinct combination of Native dress and Anglo-issued garments.

White Bear, known in Kiowa as Satanta, was a prominent Kiowa chief and orator active during the treaty period of the 1860s and 1870s. His presence at Denver would be consistent with diplomatic travel during the years surrounding the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, and his distinctive appearance aligns with known portraits of him from that period.

The reverse bears a period inscription in pencil reading "Ind - Tribes - Kiowas" and in ink "Front - left - White Bear," with the printed imprint of Goehner & Co. Art Gallery, Cor. Larimer & 15th Streets, Denver.
