Two men identified by ink inscription as Toole and P. Bedford are portrayed in a full-length studio composition by H. N. King, Photographer to the Queen, 42½ Milsom Street, Bath. The seated figure is a stout older man wearing a tall silk top hat, a dark frock coat, waistcoat, and white shirt with a bow tie, his legs crossed and one hand resting open on his knee. The standing figure is a younger, notably taller man positioned directly beside him, dressed in a dark tailcoat, waistcoat with visible watch chain, light trousers, and a bow tie, with one hand placed on the back of the chair and the other tucked behind his back.

The studio setting features a heavily patterned brocade curtain to the left, a fluted column backdrop at center, a decorative wallpapered panel to the right, and a patterned carpet underfoot. The contrast in height and build between the two figures is pronounced and appears central to the composition.

John Lawrence Toole was a celebrated Victorian comic actor known for his work at the Gaiety Theatre in London, and portrait CDVs of theatrical personalities were widely circulated during this period. The pairing with a tall companion would have carried comic and theatrical resonance consistent with Toole's stage persona.

Paul Bedford was an English comedian who performed the duo as a foil for Toole’s nervous, energetic stage manner.

The reverse bears the printed imprint of H. N. King with a Royal coat of arms, the lines "Negative Kept" and "Copies may be always had," an oval ink stamp reading "Lesage, 40 Lr Sackville St, Artist's Repository, Dublin," and handwritten notations including "9/17/11" and "LOBAHZ."
