A large Italianate wooden hotel at Trenton Falls, New York fills this CDV, photographed by Monroe of Rochester, New York and dateable to the 1860s or 1870s based on mount style and imprint typography. The structure rises four stories with two prominent square cupolas, arched windows on the upper tower levels, and bracketed eaves consistent with the Italianate style popular in American resort architecture of the mid-nineteenth century. Several figures animate the scene, grounding the image in its tourist context.

A man in a dark frock coat and hat stands in the foreground path at left, while a second hatted man stands near the base of the broad covered porch at center. Two additional figures, one appearing to wear a light-colored dress, are visible on the porch behind a decorative latticed railing with turned balusters and ornamental carved trim at the roofline. Mature trees frame both sides of the composition.

Trenton Falls, located in Oneida County, New York, was one of the most celebrated natural tourist destinations in the northeastern United States throughout the nineteenth century, drawing visitors to its dramatic gorge along West Canada Creek. Hotels serving this trade were substantial establishments catering to an affluent summer clientele.

The reverse bears a printed red imprint within a ruled border reading: HOTEL, TRENTON FALLS. MONROE, PHOTOGRAPHER, Rochester, N.Y.
