A young girl posed beside a Wheeler & Wilson sewing machine on its original iron treadle stand is captured in this CDV by W. J. Newell, Photographer, Dover, New Hampshire, dating to the 1860s or 1870s. The deliberate inclusion of the machine as the compositional centerpiece, with the manufacturer's label clearly visible on the front panel, strongly suggests this was produced as a promotional or advertising photograph rather than a conventional family portrait, making it an uncommon and commercially significant example of the format.

The girl stands to the right of the sewing machine with her left hand resting on its surface, wearing a light-colored smock over a plaid skirt with a matching plaid sash at the waist, dark ankle boots, and her dark curly hair loosely pinned. The Wheeler & Wilson machine sits open on its wheeled iron treadle table with the lid raised, its mechanism visible, and the brand placard reading "W&W S M" clearly legible at the front. Two small doll or figurine heads are visible on the floor beneath the treadle.

Wheeler & Wilson was one of the dominant American sewing machine manufacturers of the mid-nineteenth century, competing directly with Singer and producing machines widely regarded for their quality and innovation. Promotional CDVs featuring their machines are documented but uncommon, and examples pairing a child subject with the product are particularly rare.

The reverse bears the printed imprint of W. J. Newell, Photographer, Dover, New Hampshire, with penciled notations reading "Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine," "K," "200," and catalog number "0cdv152."
