General John G. Foster stands at full length in this albumen CDV, photographed from Mathew Brady's negative and published by E. Anthony at 501 Broadway, New York. The portrait dates to the Civil War era, most likely during the period Foster commanded the Department of North Carolina from 1862 through December 1863. The image was printed and distributed through Brady's National Portrait Gallery series, one of the most prominent documentary portrait enterprises of the war years.

Foster wears a double-breasted Union major general's frock coat with two rows of large brass buttons, black velvet cuffs, and a shoulder strap bearing two stars visible on his left shoulder. He holds a forage cap loosely at his side with his right hand, stands in a three-quarter turn toward the camera, and carries a full beard with dark hair swept back from his forehead. A studio pedestal is partially visible at the right edge of the frame.

John Gray Foster was a West Point graduate and career engineer officer who played a significant role in the defense of Fort Sumter in 1861 and later led Union forces through the Carolina campaigns. His command of the Department of North Carolina placed him among the senior Union commanders directing coastal operations in the Eastern Theater.

The reverse bears the printed imprint "From Photographic Negative Brady's National Portrait Gallery, Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York," along with a penciled inscription reading "Gen John G. Foster" and additional handwritten notations including the number 25.
