General Quincy Adams Gillmore stands in three-quarter view in this albumen CDV published by E. & H.T. Anthony at 501 Broadway, New York, from a negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Gillmore wears a double-breasted Union officer's frock coat with two rows of large brass buttons, shoulder straps indicating general officer rank, and a staff officer's sash knotted at his left hip. In his right hand he holds his kepi, which bears a visible brass badge, and in his left he grips the hilt and tassel of his sword at his side.

Gillmore graduated first in the West Point class of 1849 and rose to national prominence through the April 1862 bombardment and capture of Fort Pulaski, Georgia, a landmark demonstration of rifled artillery against masonry fortifications. Commanding the Department of the South and the X Corps, he directed the captures of Morris Island and Fort Wagner and contributed to the destruction of Fort Sumter before participating in the defense of Washington against Jubal Early's 1864 raid, during which a fall from his horse left him severely injured.

The reverse bears the printed E. & H.T. Anthony publisher's imprint with Brady's National Portrait Gallery credit, pencil inscriptions reading "Gillmore" and "Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore," and the notations "CDV" and "INV #1392."
