Four unidentified children gather outdoors around an ornate toy Guignol puppet theater resting on a cast-iron garden table in this albumen carte-de-visite, likely dating to the 1870s or 1880s based on the mount style and clothing. One child, a smiling girl wearing a dark bow tie at the neck and a light-colored jacket, stands at the center gesturing toward the theater, while two children seated to the left in wire garden chairs watch attentively and a fourth child seated to the right faces the stage. The theatrical setting, photographed against a dense leafy hedge, gives the image an unusually animated and candid quality for the period, with no photographer's imprint visible on the mount.

The decorated theater box bears the word "GUIGNOL" across its ornamental proscenium arch, with a painted scenic backdrop visible inside the stage opening showing figures in a landscape. The standing girl's jacket is buttoned with visible closures at the waist, and the seated children wear knee-length trousers and layered skirts consistent with late nineteenth-century European children's dress.

Guignol is a French puppet character originating in Lyon around 1808, and toy Guignol theaters of this decorative type were popular bourgeois playthings throughout France during the Second Empire and Third Republic periods, making this CDV a rare and evocative document of domestic childhood play.

The reverse bears a pencil inscription reading "Toy Theater Guignol" and a notation "2/15/04 AEDGF1" with the letter designation "Eb."
