A single upright branch of what appears to be Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as tea tree or manuka, bearing small white flowers toward its upper tip is the subject of this albumen carte-de-visite published by J.E. Tilton and Co. of 161 Washington Street, Boston, and photographed by James Wallace Black, as stated on the reverse. The fifth botanical CDV from the Tilton and Black series in this sale, the image follows the same spare compositional approach as its companions, presenting a single specimen against a plain ground with no props or setting to distract from the plant's form.

The branch extends nearly the full height of the image, its small narrow leaves arranged alternately along the stem in a feathery pattern, with small white open flowers clustered densely toward the upper third and scattered buds and seed capsules visible lower on the stem. The delicate radiating stamens of the open blooms are rendered with notable sharpness for the CDV format. The lower portion of the branch is bare of flowers, showing the woody structure of the stem clearly.

The reverse bears the standard black-printed circular imprint of J.E. Tilton and Co., Photograph Albums and Cartes de Visite, 161 Washn. St., Boston, with the printed line "Photographed by Black." A pencil notation reads "Z61Z" at the lower right.
