A clever double exposure trick photograph presents the same unidentified man appearing twice in a single image, once standing and once seated, engaged in apparent conversation with himself in this sharp cabinet card by Higley and Barr, Ground Floor Studio, Winona, Minnesota. The image dates to the late 1880s or early 1890s. Double exposure trick portraits of this type required careful planning of pose, lighting, and plate masking to prevent the two exposures from overlapping, and were a popular novelty specialty among technically ambitious studio photographers of the period.

The standing figure gestures with his finger into his extended right hand, gesturing toward the seated version of himself in an attitude of explanation or argument. The seated figure leans back slightly with mouth open and an expression of surprise or objection, hands resting on his knees. Both figures wear identical dark suits, white shirts, and bow ties, confirming the single-subject double exposure technique. A small pin or ornament is visible in the hair of the seated figure, likely a positioning marker used during the two-exposure process.

The mount face bears the printed imprint of Higley and Barr, Ground Floor Studio, Winona, Minn. in formal serif type across the lower border.
