Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A hand-colored albumen cabinet card depicting a staged Neapolitan street food scene, produced by Giorgio Sommer from his Largo Vittoria studio in Naples. Sommer's carefully staged genre scenes, often featuring peasants and street vendors, were highly popular with tourists and today serve as invaluable visual records of 19th-century Italian life. The mount's printed imprint reads "Grande Medagha d'oro," reflecting the studio's award recognition, and the image is inscribed "A Street Scene at Naples" in script along the lower mount. Catalog number 6225 appears within the image at lower left, consistent with Sommer's practice of printing the negative number and caption in the lower edge of the image.

A male vendor stands at center behind a wicker-framed cart supporting two large ceramic cooking pots, one rendered in vivid orange-red hand-coloring over an open flame. Four children in ragged, barefoot dress surround him: one boy at left leans against a chair eating from a small plate, a girl at center-right in a blue jacket exposes her midriff, a seated boy at right eats with his hand, and a fourth child lies sprawled on the floor in the foreground propped on one elbow, a white plate at his side. The coloring is selectively applied in purple, teal, and orange to heighten the theatrical effect of the composition.

In Naples during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, maccheroni referred to pasta in any form, not just tubular shapes, and it was sold as a popular street food. Watching locals eat pasta with their bare hands was considered a must for tourists visiting Naples, and styled studio photographs of this theme were widely purchased as souvenirs. Giorgio Sommer, born 2 September 1834 in Frankfurt and active in Naples until his death on 7 August 1914, was one of Europe's most important and prolific photographers of the 19th century.

Front mount inscribed in script: "A street scene at Naples." Printed studio imprint reads: "G. Sommer / Palazzo proprio / Grande Medagha d'oro / Napoli / Largo Vittoria." Catalog number 6225 printed in the negative at lower left of image. Reverse bears a light pencil notation.
