Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A robust horse-drawn mission van operated by the Church Army fills the frame of this outdoor cabinet card, photographed in a rural English setting by James Charles Dinham of the Gainsborough Gallery, Torquay, almost certainly in the 1890s. The Church Army, founded in 1882 in association with the Church of England, was dedicated to evangelism and social outreach, and its mission vans were a central tool for reaching provincial communities. Dinham established his Torquay business in the 1890s, and he regularly ventured out to photograph colorful characters and street scenes, engaging in an early form of photojournalism.

The van's painted side panels carry scripture passages and organizational branding in large block lettering, including the lines "When the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive," along with the headings "The Church Army," "Pure Literature & Gospel Temperance," and the van's name, "The Hereford," with headquarters listed on Edgware Road. A mustachioed man in a dark suit stands at the van's open rear door holding a brass instrument, while a uniformed officer stands at left with arms crossed, and four young children in light dresses and a boy in a cap are gathered around the base of the boarding ladder and at the far right.

The Church Army operated internationally across the Anglican Communion, and its named vans like "The Hereford" traveled designated circuits, combining gospel preaching with temperance advocacy and tract distribution. Dinham was a man ahead of his time, creating early story-telling photo-journalism that documented community life with rare documentary precision.

The reverse bears the printed imprint of J. C. Dinham, Gainsborough Gallery, Portrait, Group & Architectural Photographer, 34 Union Street, Torquay, with a notation that additional copies or enlargements in monochrome watercolors or oils may be obtained by quoting the catalog number; a handwritten notation "0671" appears at the lower right of the reverse.
