Mary and Annie Gates are portrayed in this cabinet card by Frank Bennett Fiske, the noted photographer stationed at Fort Yates, North Dakota, whose documentation of the Standing Rock Sioux community produced some of the most significant Native American portraiture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Both subjects are presented in a formal studio arrangement, one standing and one seated, consistent with Fiske's compositional approach during his most active period at the fort.

The standing figure wears a patterned calico dress beneath an elaborate bone hairpipe breastplate extending nearly to the waist, paired with a geometric-striped blanket skirt and beaded moccasins. The seated figure is dressed in a dark cloth dress trimmed with a tiered dentalium shell collar, a long strand of graduated disc beads descending to the floor, and a broad metal bracelet at the wrist. Both women wear their hair in long braids adorned with additional shell ornaments.

Fiske operated his studio at Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Agency and produced portraits of Lakota and Dakota subjects from approximately 1901 through the 1920s, creating a body of work now held in major institutional collections including the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

The reverse bears a contemporary ink inscription reading "Mary + Annie Gates." The imprint on the mount face reads "F. B. Fiske, Fort Yates, N. D."
