Four unidentified children - street waifs in their worn working-class clothing pose against a backdrop of overlapping commercial handbills in this remarkable cabinet card by G.W. Griffin of Ormskirk Street, St. Helens, Lancashire, dating to circa August 1884 based on the date visible in the poster text behind them. The contrast between the children's threadbare dress and the loud commercial advertising surrounding them gives the image an unintended social document quality rare in studio portraiture of the period. Whether Griffin composed this backdrop deliberately or simply used available wall material, the result is one of the more visually striking working-class child portraits of the Victorian era.

Three girls and a boy are arranged loosely on a fabric-covered floor. The boy sits at front left in a worn jacket with bare ankles visible above his shoes. Two older girls stand at rear, both in dark plain dresses with their hair loose, one looking slightly away and one facing the camera directly. A younger girl sits at front right with bare feet visible, her expression solemn. Each of the children appear to be working class street waifs, a rare subject in studio portraits of the period.

The backdrop posters are clearly legible and include advertising for overcoats, special value suitings, trouserings, and various colours, alongside repeated references to Griffin's own photography studio opening on August 4th, placing this image in a specific and verifiable moment. The reverse bears Griffin's elaborate red-printed imprint with a royal crest, his address at Ormskirk Street, St. Helens, Lancashire, and the notation "Paintings on Canvas Ivory and Paper."
