A group of Arikara people gathered on the open plains at Fort Berthold, North Dakota, photographed in 1890 by C. B. Brown of Minot, North Dakota. The albumen print on a standard cabinet card mount captures an outdoor scene with a tipi prominently visible at right and a flat, open landscape extending to the horizon. The handwritten inscription along the lower mount reads "Arickee Indians / Year 1890 / Fort Berthold N. Dak." alongside the printed photographer's imprint.

A mounted rider faces the camera at left, seated bareback on a horse with reins in hand. To the right, a woman wrapped in a plaid blanket holds a small child on her back, a second woman stands beside her holding another child, a young child stands at center, and a man in a broad-brimmed hat and light shirt stands nearest the tipi. A dog is faintly visible at the far right edge.

The Arikara, also known as the Sahnish, were among the three affiliated tribes residing at Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota, which was formally established in 1870. Fort Berthold remained the primary settlement for the Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa peoples throughout this period.
