We are pleased to present our Winter Photography Auction, opening January 31 at 1:00 PM Eastern, featuring approximately 270 individual lots spanning the full breadth of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography’s formative century.

Cabinet card by Parcell, Photographer, Kirksville, MO, ca. 1880s–1890s. A compelling studio portrait of a young African American woman seated in a carved Victorian chair with a white infant in a long christening gown resting across her lap. Images documenting Black domestic labor and caregiving in the 19th century remain uncommon outside Southern urban centers; examples from small Midwestern towns such as Kirksville are especially scarce. Studio imprint on the mount and decorative verso.

Light overall toning, scattered small surface spots, and mild edge wear to mount. Image remains strong with good detail.
