Five albumen boudoir cards by F. Jay Haynes, official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad, constitute a cohesive and historically important grouping of Western American landscape views produced from his St. Paul, Minnesota studio during the 1880s and 1890s. Haynes became official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1881, and for twenty years, with a Pullman car as his studio and headquarters, he photographed the country and people along the Northern Pacific routes. The five subjects visible across the group include a dramatic canyon with vertical layered rock walls and a timber trestle, a broad mountain canyon with forested slopes, a placid river or canal cut through forested terrain with a solitary figure seated at the bank, a towering isolated rock formation amid dense conifers with a telegraph pole nearby, and a small clapboard church topped with a cross surrounded by several outbuildings.

Each card presents a wide horizontal landscape composition in warm albumen tones, with deep recession into the frame achieved through winding waterways, steep canyon walls, or open sky behind ridgelines. The church view includes a raised entry staircase, a peaked Gothic revival gable, a chimney, and a row of low rectangular structures extending behind it, suggesting a mission or railroad-town settlement. The canyon with trestle shows several workers or figures at the base of the cliff, emphasizing the scale of the terrain and the reach of railroad construction.

The Haynes photographic enterprise documented the construction and operation of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Minnesota across the country to Washington, covering geographic areas from Manitoba and Minnesota through the Dakota Territory, Montana, Wyoming, northern Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Beyond spectacular natural scenery, Haynes produced an extensive record of the modification of the landscape by railroad and industry. The "Haynes Boudoir Views" imprint, listing Northern Pacific, Yellowstone Park, Pacific Coast, and Alaska, appears on the reverse of three cards; two others carry handwritten inscriptions. Reverse inscriptions include "The Accomplishments of Vancouver," "Siskiyou Canyon, Canon City through," and "547 W. & R. Bluffs of Bismarck."
