Two named giant sequoias identified as "The Sentinels" tower above a small domed white pavilion in this albumen print boudoir card by Isaiah West Taber of San Francisco, produced circa 1880 to 1895 as part of his extensive Pacific Coast view series. The image is numbered B 982 and the title and photographer's credit are printed in the negative along the lower edge of the image. The reverse bears Taber's full studio imprint for his Photographic Parlors at 8 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, opposite the Palace and Grand Hotels.

The two massive sequoia trunks rise from a carpeted forest floor and dominate the upper two-thirds of the composition, their deeply furrowed bark rendered in fine detail against a pale sky; a smaller conifer grove recedes into the background at center. At lower left, a small octagonal or round domed pavilion with white painted siding and a finial roof is enclosed by a picket fence, providing scale against the immense trees behind it.

Taber was well known for his extensive stock of California images, and his Big Trees series was among his most commercially successful view productions, marketed to tourists traveling the Pacific Coast by rail. The reverse advertises his View Department as holding the best and largest collection of views of the Pacific Coast, including Yosemite, Big Trees, Geysers, the Columbia River, Oregon, the railroads, mining, and the Sandwich Islands.
