We are pleased to present our Winter Photography Auction, opening January 31 at 1:00 PM Eastern, featuring approximately 270 individual lots spanning the full breadth of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography’s formative century.

Small hinged book-style locket containing two oval albumen portrait photographs, one depicting George Washington and the other Abraham Lincoln. The images are albumen prints, each approximately the diameter of a modern nickel, mounted within gilt metal frames inside the locket. The Washington portrait matches the familiar engraved likeness seen on the nickel shown for scale, reinforcing the intended visual correspondence between image and object. No photographer’s imprint is visible on the photographs.

The locket is constructed in a miniature album format with a top suspension loop, suggesting it was intended to be worn or carried. The exterior features an ornate gilt and black enamel-style decorative design with symmetrical foliate and geometric motifs, consistent with mid-19th-century presentation objects. The paired portraits reflect the strong period interest in commemorative and patriotic imagery, particularly figures associated with the founding of the nation and the Civil War era.

Interior mounts are fitted with oval bezels, and the images are neatly centered and evenly matched in size and tone. The overall presentation aligns with small-format keepsake lockets produced in the mid-19th century, designed to house photographic reproductions rather than unique camera-made portraits.
