Albumen photograph depicting President Abraham Lincoln in three-quarter profile, taken on the balcony of the White House on March 6, 1865, just weeks before his assassination. The image is credited to H. F. Warren of Waltham, Massachusetts and bears the period caption beneath the image reading, “THE LATEST PHOTOGRAPH OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN,” with the date of exposure clearly stated. This is one of the final photographic likenesses made from life and has long been recognized as a late, reflective portrait showing Lincoln’s gaunt features and deeply etched expression at the close of the Civil War.
The albumen print measures approximately 6 × 8½ inches and is mounted to its original larger presentation card measuring approximately 10½ × 13½ inches. The mount carries Warren’s imprint at lower left and right. The photograph exhibits even tonal range with soft, deliberate vignetting around the bust, consistent with Warren’s known printing style for this image. A small area of surface disturbance is visible in the lower right field of the image, with additional light staining and age-toning to the mount, all consistent with mid-19th-century albumen materials.
A printed collector’s label, previously affixed to the frame, accompanies the piece and identifies the photograph as a rare original bust portrait by Warren, further documenting its history and attribution. Overall condition is very good for the format, with strong visual presence and clear legibility of the caption. A historically significant and highly desirable late-life portrait of Abraham Lincoln, representing one of the final photographic records of the 16th President.
