Cabinet card albumen print depicting two men seated at a small table engaged in a game of cards, one without arms, shown manipulating the playing cards with his feet. The image was produced by Betz, whose Baltimore studio imprint appears on the mount with the address 415 & 417 N. Washington Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The format, studio style, and imprint place the photograph in the late 19th century.

Occupational and novelty portraits featuring physical anomalies were a distinct genre within 19th-century studio photography, often documenting performers, exhibition subjects, or individuals whose abilities challenged contemporary assumptions about disability and labor. The deliberate staging of the card game emphasizes skill and dexterity rather than spectacle alone, presenting the sitter as an active participant rather than a passive curiosity. Such images circulated privately and commercially, reflecting period interest in human adaptability and public display.

Albumen print mounted on a standard cabinet card with a handwritten inscription on the verso reading “To H. Urban with compliments from C. H. Betz, Chicago, Jan 11th, 1896,” indicating personal presentation by the photographer and providing a firm date. A rare and compelling example of late 19th-century American vernacular photography addressing disability, performance, and studio narrative through carefully constructed composition.
