Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A three-masted sailing vessel dominates the center of this atmospheric albumen print, captured as billowing clouds of dark smoke roll across the harbor behind her, likely the exhaust of a steam tug assisting her passage. The photograph dates to the late Victorian era, circa 1870s–1890s, and is unmounted, printed directly on albumen paper with a warm sepia tone characteristic of the period. No photographer's imprint is visible.

The vessel's dark-painted hull is rendered with striking clarity, her squared yards, standing rigging, and crosstrees fully intact against the hazy sky. A small rowboat with a single oarsman sits off the bow on a taut line, while a second tender is visible closer to the quayside. Terraced commercial buildings and a hillside town line the left bank, with a stone pier and lighthouse visible on the far right through the smoke.

The harbor's layout, with its flanking stone piers and cliffside townscape along a river estuary, is consistent with a working port on the northeast coast of England during the height of British coastal trade under sail. The dramatic smoke-shrouded atmosphere lends the image a quality unusual among harbor views of the period, suggesting the photograph was taken during an active moment of port activity rather than a posed or staged composition.

The reverse bears a penciled notation reading "21" in the upper right corner. No photographer's imprint, publisher's credit, or location inscription is present.
