Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A large-format albumen print capturing a two-masted sailing vessel hard aground on a rocky tidal flat, photographed from a low vantage point that amplifies the drama of the stranded hull. The ship is pushed against the base of a steep coastal cliff at left, her masts, yards, and standing rigging intact against a cloud-streaked sky, suggesting the grounding was recent. No photographer's imprint is visible on the mount.

The vessel is a brig or brigantine type, her bare hull dark and heavily built, with a prominent bowsprit angled sharply downward and anchor lines still running from the bow. A horse-drawn wagon is visible at the base of the hull, likely deployed in salvage or cargo recovery operations, and a small vessel or equipment cluster appears in the middle distance at the water's edge. The foreground is a wide expanse of exposed tidal mudflat strewn with boulders.

The caption lettered in the image lower left reads "Stuck in the Mud 59 Fms," with the fathoms notation suggesting the recorded depth at grounding or the sounding of surrounding water. The reverse bears a cursive pencil inscription reading "Stuck in the mud."
