Ninth plate ambrotype portrait of a young Civil War era soldier, seated and wearing a military-style jacket with standing collar and brass buttons. The uniform, pose, and overall presentation are consistent with early 1860s Southern or border-state enlistment portraits, and the image is possibly Confederate, though no explicit insignia or identification is present to confirm affiliation.

The sitter’s youthful appearance and plain uniform reflect the vernacular studio style common during the opening years of the Civil War, when regional photographic practices varied widely and resources were uneven. The ambrotype is housed in a period pressed leather case with geometric and foliate decoration, retaining its original gilt brass mat and red silk pad. The plate shows scattered emulsion flaws and light surface spotting, typical of mid-19th-century ambrotype production. The case exhibits expected wear along the spine and edges.

An evocative and well-preserved Civil War era soldier portrait, presented with appropriate historical caution regarding attribution.
