A pair of albumen silver print cabinet cards, each produced by Sarony at 37 Union Square, New York, whose imprint appears in gilt lettering on the dark lower border of both mounts. The two cards depict vignetted portraits of two unidentified South Asian women in bust-length portraits. The consistency of studio, format, and dress suggests they were photographed during the same sitting. Napoleon Sarony was among the most prominent commercial portrait photographers in nineteenth-century New York, operating his Union Square studio from the 1870s through the 1890s.

In the left card, the younger-appearing subject is shown at a slight angle, her expression relaxed and direct. She wears a light-colored dupatta with a patterned border draped over her head and shoulders, and a small nose stud is visible on the left side of her nose. The right card shows an older woman photographed frontally, wearing pendant earrings, a beaded or jeweled choker, a fine chain necklace, and a similarly draped dupatta of lighter fabric falling to either side of her center-parted hair.

The two portraits are notably consistent in their plain, unadorned studio treatment, with no painted backdrop or props, the figures emerging from a light ground with minimal shadow. This spare approach, combined with the traditional dress and jewelry visible in both images, suggests the subjects may have been visiting New York and sat for Sarony during their time in the city.
