A full-length portrait of an unidentified Zouave soldier stands as the subject of this quarter plate tintype, presented in an octagonal thermoplastic case with a gold-painted mat, beaded gilt oval frame, and red fabric border. The image dates to the Civil War era, approximately 1861 to 1865, consistent with the format, case style, and military dress. No photographer's imprint is visible.

The soldier stands beside an ornate carved parlor chair, his right hand resting on its back and his left hand placed on his hip. He wears a Zouave-style jacket with a large decorative device or numeral on the chest, loose dark trousers, white gaiters, and low shoes. A tasseled cap sits atop his head at a slight angle. A dog, appearing to be a spaniel with light and dark markings, rests on the seat of the chair beside him.

Zouave units were among the most visually distinctive of the Civil War, drawing their colorful uniform traditions from French North African troops and adopted by both Union and Confederate volunteer regiments. The inclusion of a dog in a military portrait was uncommon and adds considerable appeal, as studio animals were rarely introduced into soldier sittings and may indicate the subject brought his own companion to the session.
