Two unidentified men pose with stringed instruments in this ferrotype tintype, likely dating to the 1870s or 1880s based on clothing and format. The seated figure holds a cello upright between his knees, bow in his lowered right hand, while the standing figure grips a fiddle and bow at chest height. No photographer's imprint is visible, and the maker remains unmarked.

The seated musician wears a low-crowned felt hat, a sack coat, and a vest, with a mustache clearly visible on his upturned face. The standing figure wears a flat brimmed cap, a fitted jacket with visible buttons, and loose trousers. Both men face the camera with serious expressions against a painted backdrop depicting trees and foliage, with a simulated architectural column visible at the left edge.

The pairing of cello and fiddle in an informal studio setting is consistent with rural or folk music traditions of the late nineteenth century American South and Midwest, where such combinations were common at dances and community gatherings.
