Carte-de-visite–size tintype depicting two young men posed outdoors with high-wheel bicycles, commonly known as penny-farthings or “ordinary” bicycles. Each machine features the defining oversized front driving wheel with pedals mounted directly to the hub and a much smaller trailing rear wheel, a configuration used prior to the widespread adoption of chain-driven safety bicycles.

The sitters wear period sporting attire including caps, jackets, and knee-length trousers, consistent with cycling fashion of the late nineteenth century. The bicycles appear well-constructed with curved forks and tension-spoked wheels, suggesting mid-to-late 1870s to early 1880s manufacture. High-wheel cycling was both a popular sport and a symbol of modernity during this brief but influential period in transportation history.

An evocative early image documenting recreational cycling culture and the transitional phase of bicycle design. Tintype shows expected surface wear and edge oxidation, consistent with age.
