A seated Native American man is portrayed in this sixth plate tintype, housed in an embossed gilt frame with a rounded rectangular mat and floral corner and border ornaments. The format and case style suggest a date in the 1860s to 1870s, consistent with the peak period of tintype portraiture. No photographer's imprint is visible.

The subject wears a light-colored Western-style suit jacket, open at the front with visible lapels and buttons, paired with dark trousers. A neckerchief or cravat is loosely tied at the throat. His long dark hair falls past his shoulders on both sides of his face, and his hands are clasped together and rest in his lap. His expression is direct and unsmiling, his gaze meeting the camera squarely.

The adoption of Western dress by Native American subjects in nineteenth century photographs frequently reflected the pressures of assimilation policies, reservation life, or diplomatic contexts rather than personal preference. Portraits combining indigenous identity with Euro-American clothing are an important and complex category of ethnographic and historical photography from this period, and this image represents a candid and immediate example of that intersection.
