Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

This group of three ninth plate thermoplastic cases represents a strong cross-section of mid-nineteenth-century American case design, with one case retaining its original daguerreotype portrait. The cases date to the 1850s and were produced during the height of thermoplastic case manufacturing in the United States, when molded decorative covers largely displaced plain leather housings for smaller plate sizes.

The three cover designs are visually distinct: the first features an allover Gothic floral and foliate pattern with quatrefoil motifs, the second centers a winged angel or cupid figure within an oval cartouche surrounded by scrolled ornament, and the third presents an octagonal form molded with a figural scene of two individuals at a chess table framed by acanthus scrollwork. Interiors include a burgundy velvet pad opposite a gilt brass mat with engraved foliate corners, a green velvet pad with embossed interior, and a crimson silk pad, respectively.

The daguerreotype, housed in the angel case, shows a clean-shaven young man in a dark coat and bow tie, facing forward in a composed bust-length pose within a gilt cartouche mat.

Property of a Palmer, Massachusetts gentleman.
