Five of the six stereoviews in this lot document the construction and hangar housing of the USS Akron (ZRS-4), one of the largest rigid airships ever built, published by Keystone View Company with catalog numbers visible on the mounts including 32738, 32743, 32739, and 17493. The views capture the airship at various stages, from exterior hangar scenes at Lakehurst, New Jersey, to close interior views of the skeletal aluminum girder framework taken during construction at Akron, Ohio. A sixth card, unnumbered and from a different publisher, depicts a street scene with figures gathered before a damaged or partially demolished brick building and does not relate to the airship subjects.

The zeppelin views record the circular nose framework under electric floodlights, the vast interior of the Goodyear Dock hangar, the inflated outer covering being fitted over the rigid skeleton, and exterior ground-level views of the enormous hull. Figures visible at the base of the nose frame provide striking scale. The framework cards show dense latticed diagonal and vertical girders reaching across the full stereo field.

The USS Akron was commissioned in 1931 as a flying aircraft carrier for the United States Navy, capable of launching and recovering Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes from an internal hangar. She was lost in a storm off the New Jersey coast in April 1933, making documentation of her construction especially significant.

Captions printed on lower mounts include references to the Goodyear Dock and supporting girders of ZRS-4.
