A group of six albumen stereoviews documenting Royal Navy warships of the Channel Fleet, photographed by G. W. Wilson of Aberdeen, one of the most prominent British photographers of the Victorian era. The reverses identify the vessels specifically: HMS Aboukir (90 guns, 800 horsepower), HMS Revenge (91 guns, 800 horsepower, flagship of the Channel Fleet), HMS Conqueror (101 guns, 800 horsepower), HMS Centurion (80 guns, 400 horsepower), and the gunnery training ship HMS Excellent at Portsmouth Harbour during Great Gun Practice. All six are mounted on yellow card stock.

The views capture the ships at anchor and under way on open water, their full three-masted rigging and multiple gun decks rendered with fine detail. One view includes a gaff-rigged sailing vessel passing close alongside a ship of the line, with a small open rowboat visible in the foreground. The Portsmouth view shows the Excellent broadside-on with cannon smoke visible and several smaller steam and oared vessels surrounding her.

Wilson's naval series, produced during the 1860s and 1870s, documented the late transition-era British fleet as ironclads began supplanting the last wooden and composite-hulled ships of the line. The reverses carry Wilson's printed imprint "G. W. Wilson, Photographer, Aberdeen," catalog numbers 318B, 320, 320A, 322, and 427, and the legend "142. A Calm Off Ryde, Isle of Wight" on the sixth card, along with a book seller's oval stamp reading "John Collins, London St., Reading."
