El Capitan and the valley's granite walls recede into atmospheric haze across the middle distance, while a lone conifer rises sharply in the foreground of both frames, anchoring the composition with a characteristic Watkins vertical accent.

The foreground ridge descends steeply in dark tones of chaparral and exposed rock, contrasting against the pale granite faces of the valley walls beyond. A thin cascade is visible in the middle distance at left, and layered ridgelines fade into the hazy background. The paired albumen prints exhibit the warm sepia tonality typical of Watkins's Pacific Coast series production.

Watkins was among the first photographers to document Yosemite at monumental scale, and his images directly influenced Congress's 1864 Yosemite Grant. The recto imprint reads "Watkins' Pacific Coast, 429 Montgomery Street, San Francisco," and the right border carries the copyright notice.
