An elderly African American man stands with a cane before a plank board fence accompanied by a young boy and a dog in this albumen stereoview produced by Alfred S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, copyrighted 1896, catalog number 610, titled "The Blind Beggar" in the right panel caption. Campbell's signature appears in script across the left panel. The card is a flat-mount format consistent with 1890s American stereoview production.

The man wears a battered soft hat, a heavy overcoat with a large collar, and worn trousers, his weight supported on a walking stick held in both hands. The boy beside him wears a knit cap and a dark jacket with knee breeches, standing close at his left. A dark-coated dog sits at the boy's feet. Bare-branched trees are visible above the fence line, and the cobblestone or brick pavement of the ground is visible at lower frame.

Alfred S. Campbell was an active New Jersey stereoview publisher of the 1880s and 1890s, producing genre and documentary subjects marketed to the American stereoscope trade. Genre scenes depicting poverty, disability, and street life were a common category in late nineteenth-century American stereoview publishing, drawing on conventions established in earlier illustrated press imagery and sold as social documentary entertainment to middle-class parlor audiences.
