Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A bird's-eye view of a devastated neoclassical palatial complex forms the subject of this albumen tissue stereoview, mounted on a vivid yellow card with an embossed decorative border. The photograph captures the immediate aftermath of catastrophic structural destruction, placing it securely within the rich body of French ruin photography produced in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War and Paris Commune of 1870–1871. No photographer's imprint appears on the mount.

The surviving ground-floor facade retains a classical pediment supported by pilasters, with tall French windows behind an ornamental iron railing; above it, an entire upper story has been reduced to a low, rubble-strewn wall, with two chimney stacks still rising against a canopy of bare deciduous trees. Small figures in dark clothing are visible picking through the debris along the top of the ruined wall, lending human scale to the devastation. A gravel path and low hedge line the foreground below the wrought-iron fence.

After the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870–1871, several photographers documented the city's destruction, focusing on official French buildings set on fire by the Communards. The fires of Paris during the Commune refer to the widespread destruction of public monuments and private buildings, particularly during Bloody Week, from 21 to 28 May 1871. This stereoview belongs to that urgent documentary tradition, produced while ruins were still fresh and the debris uncleared.

The reverse bears a cursive pencil inscription reading "Palais de Clavy" (Palace of Clavy), along with the notations "4/19/12" and "LAABBZ" and the number "05" in printed characters.
