Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

This stereoview captures a rooftop panorama looking northwest across Denver, Colorado, taken by the local firm of C. Duhem & Bro. as plate No. 21 in their published series "Beauties of the Rocky Mountains." A period pencil notation on the mount reads 1870, consistent with the raw, still-developing character of the streetscape recorded below. The elevated vantage point places the photographer above the rooflines of Denver's young commercial district, with open plains stretching to the horizon beyond the last row of buildings.

The foreground is dominated by an unfinished brick chimney and scattered roofing lumber, evidence of the building the photographer stood atop to make the view. Below, painted signage identifies "Park Stables" and a two-story building marked "Leather & Shoe Findings Storage & Commission," alongside a row of modest brick and frame storefronts lining a wide dirt street. Small trees dot the vacant lots between structures, and the open prairie beyond town's edge underscores how recently Denver's built environment had been established.

The matched left and right images preserve the same view in stereo, allowing the arcaded commercial building at center, with its shopfronts and second-story windows, to read with real dimensional depth. A cluster of low outbuildings sits along the street's edge closest to camera, while haze softens the distant hills along the horizon.

The mount's reverse carries the printed label "Beauties of the Rocky Mountains, No. 21, View looking north west of Denver, Photographed by C. Duhem & Bro., Denver, Colorado," with pencil inscriptions "9.193" and "1870" on the front mount.
