Albumen stereoview portrait of Sir David Brewster seated in a studio setting. The elderly sitter is shown in formal dress with white hair and seated beside a small table covered with a cloth, on which rests a stereoscopic viewer or optical instrument. The image is presented as a close seated portrait against a dark backdrop and likely dates to the mid to late 1860s based on photographic style and mount format. Sir David Brewster was a Scottish scientist and pioneer in optical science and stereoscopy. His association with stereoscopic photography made portraits such as this appropriate subjects for stereoview publication. Plain mount with twin oval image windows. The verso bears a printed biographical label reading “Sir David Brewster, K.H., D.C.L., Principal of the University of Edinburgh,” listing his academic honors and affiliations, along with later pencil notations.
