Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

From an elevated vantage point above the Rue Saint-Denis, this albumen stereoview captures one of Paris's great baroque monuments in vivid street-level context, alive with mid-day pedestrian traffic. The photograph belongs to the "Vues Instantanées de Paris" series published by Hippolyte Jouvin (1825–1889), a celebrated Parisian stereoscopic photographer who issued a series of over two hundred such views in 1863. The term "instantanée" was deliberate: Jouvin used fast exposure times specifically to capture moving figures in the streets, a feat impossible with earlier large-format cameras whose long exposures rendered Parisian thoroughfares empty. The yellow card mount bears the printed legend "Photographie H. à Paris / Vue Instantanée (Déposé)" along its vertical borders.

The triumphal arch dominates the frame, its massive rusticated piers richly carved with allegorical military reliefs in high relief, including trophy groups and the Latin inscription "LUDOVICO MAGNO" visible across the entablature. The broad cobblestone square before the arch teems with pedestrians in full Victorian dress, a horse-drawn open carriage occupying the immediate foreground, and merchants beneath striped awnings lining the nearer buildings at street level.

The Porte Saint-Denis is a triumphal arch erected in honor of King Louis XIV, built in 1672 by architect François Blondel and sculptor Michel Anguier. Louis XIV ordered the monument to commemorate his victories in Franche-Comté and on the Rhine. It was classified as a historic monument in 1862, the very year before Jouvin's series appeared. Art historians have argued that Jouvin's "Vues Instantanées de Paris" may have inspired the Impressionists, with art historian Aaron Scharf specifically comparing the elevated viewpoints in paintings by Gustave Caillebotte to those found in Jouvin's photographs.

The reverse bears a printed paper label reading: "VUE INSTANTANÉE DE PARIS. / Nº 109 / Rue et Porte St. Denis." (Instant View of Paris. / No. 109 / Rue and Porte Saint-Denis.) A dealer or inventory notation in pencil at upper right reads "XD 152," with an additional penciled notation at lower right reading "2/18/07 LCBEZ Eb."
