Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Porte Saint-Denis dominates the center of this lively street-level panorama, the triumphal arch having been built in 1672 on the orders of Louis XIV, designed by architect François Blondel and sculptor Michel Anguier to celebrate the king's military victories. The view is taken from an elevated vantage point looking south along the boulevard, capturing the arch in full relief against a receding streetscape. The yellow card mount, no photographer's imprint, and the albumen silver print process suggest a French commercial stereoview of the 1860s to 1870s.

Horse-drawn omnibuses and carriages crowd the foreground pavement in motion blur, while pedestrians cluster along both curbs beneath awnings and gas lamp posts. A corner commercial building at left carries signage for "Jolivino" above a ground-floor shop reading "Galeries / Fabrique Horlogerie / de la Bourse," with a large painted number 8 on the facade above. French tricolor flags fly from rooftops visible behind the arch, and tree canopies line the boulevard toward the distant horizon.

The Porte Saint-Denis was the first of four triumphal arches built in Paris, predating the Porte Saint-Martin (1674), the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, and the Arc de Triomphe. It was listed as a historic monument in 1862, placing this photograph squarely within the monument's early period of official recognition as a landmark of the French capital.

The reverse bears a pencil inscription in a 19th-century hand reading "63 Bar St Denis" ("63 Boulevard Saint-Denis"), a penciled catalog number 393, and a secondary notation in ink reading "DOLPEX Eb" with a date of 2/21/10 along the right edge.
