Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Photographed in the immediate aftermath of the Paris Commune's semaine sanglante of May 1871, this albumen stereoview documents a temporary pedestrian bridge spanning the Seine amid the rubble left by fire and conflict. The orange-bordered card mount, printed with an ornate embossed frame around each paired image, is characteristic of French stereoview publishers of the early 1870s who produced large commercial series documenting the Commune's destruction for a public audience eager to witness the ruins firsthand.

The scene is dominated by a skeletal iron-arch footbridge, its open framework silhouetted against a pale sky, with gas lamp posts rising along its span. Below and to the left, heaped stone rubble lines the quay, and several figures in dark clothing are visible on and beneath the bridge, lending scale to the devastation. The broad cobblestone embankment in the foreground recedes sharply into the frame, while the gutted shell of a monumental building looms in the background.

After the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris uprising of 1870 to 1871, several photographers documented the city, focusing on destruction caused by the Prussian siege and on official buildings set on fire by the Communards. The commercial success of these photograph collections stemmed from a dual purpose: documenting the results of the Commune's fires while transforming the rubble into picturesque ruins.

The reverse of the yellow card mount is inscribed in period cursive as "Incendie du Douai" (Fire of Douai), with the numeral 5 at upper right and the catalog notation "4/19/12 L0GFX2 JS" in pencil at lower center.
