Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

An elevated view of the Place Vendôme in the immediate aftermath of the Paris Commune captures the square in a state of dramatic devastation, the base of the toppled Vendôme Column visible amid a field of stone rubble and debris scattered across the open ground. The image is an albumen silver stereoview published by B.K. Éditeur under the series title "Ruines de Paris et Environs," documenting the destruction caused by the events of 1870 to 1871, when photographers turned their lenses on the Prussian siege and the fires set by the Communards. The reverse bears the imprint of A. Hautecoeur at 172, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, the established publishing and print house that sold and distributed the series.

The foreground is dominated by heaped masonry, broken stone balustrades, and mounds of earth flanking a low barricade wall, while ornate Haussmann-era facades line the perimeter of the square in the middle distance, their arched ground-floor arcades and mansard rooflines intact. Gas lamp standards stand at intervals along the cleared perimeter road, and a scaffolded chimney stack rises from the roofline at right center. The orange-tinted card mount carries the series title in bold vertical type on the left border and "B.K. Éditeur, Paris" on the right.

The Hautecoeur firm was originally founded by Aaron Martinet as Ancienne Maison Martinet; after the marriage of Martinet's daughter and Hermenégilde Hautecoeur in 1822, the firm passed to the next generation, Eugène and Alfred Hautecoeur, and the Martinet name was gradually retired. Alfred Hautecoeur directed the publishing house at 172, Rue de Rivoli, and in partnership with the publisher B.K. distributed views of post-Commune Paris to a broad European audience.

The reverse is stamped in a central oval: "Ancne Msn Martinet / A. Hautecoeur / 172, Rue de Rivoli." A manuscript inscription in ink runs vertically along the right edge of the mount, reading: "colonne Vendôme abattue / place Vendôme, 1871 / le 16 e mai / Paris" (the Vendôme Column felled / Place Vendôme, 1871 / the 16th of May / Paris). A pencil notation at lower center reads "COLBXZ 01."
