Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A French albumen tissue stereoview mounted on an orange card documents the gutted interior of a Parisian building reduced to rubble, almost certainly in the aftermath of the fires set during Bloody Week in May 1871. After the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune uprising of 1870–1871, several photographers documented the city, with their work focused on destruction caused by the Prussian siege and on the official French buildings set on fire by the Communards. No photographer's imprint is visible on the card.

The stereo pair presents a courtyard or interior passage flanked by tall, stripped masonry walls, their facades intact above but the floors entirely collapsed into a deep field of rubble and broken timbers below. A smaller intact residential structure with a pitched slate roof and a chimney stack is visible at the far end of the passage, framing the composition. Wire or iron rods hang across the gutted interior, and a low lean-to shelter survives at the base of the right-hand wall amid the debris.

The fires of Paris during the Commune refer to the widespread destruction of public monuments and private buildings, particularly during Bloody Week, from 21 to 28 May 1871. The tragedy of the Commune led many people in France and abroad to seek out photographic souvenirs of the events, and tissue stereoviews on brightly colored mounts were among the most commercially popular formats for this subject matter in the early 1870s.

The reverse bears a handwritten script inscription along the right edge, a catalog notation reading "20" in ink at the upper right corner, and additional pencil notations reading "4/19/12," "LOGFXZ," and "JS" at the lower margin.
