Brigham Young's new Salt Lake City residence anchors this albumen stereoview, photographed by Charles R. Savage and issued as part of his "Utah Series" within the larger "Views of the Great West, from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean" series. Savage, one of the most significant photographers working in the American West during the latter half of the nineteenth century, operated his studio in Salt Lake City and documented the region extensively during and after the construction of the transcontinental railroad.

The mansion presents as a grand Second Empire structure with a multi-tiered mansard roof crowned by an ornate cupola featuring arched openings on all sides. Decorative dormer windows punctuate each roof level, elaborate bracketed cornices run the full width of the facade, and a wide covered veranda with turned balusters wraps the ground floor. Bare deciduous trees line the property, and a white picket fence borders the unpaved foreground.

Brigham Young served as the first governor of Utah Territory and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until his death in 1877. The residence depicted is the Gardo House, also called the Amelia Palace, constructed in Salt Lake City during the early 1870s.
