Hardscrabble Canon near Weber Station is the subject of this albumen stereoview published by Savage & Ottinger's Pioneer Fine Art Gallery of Salt Lake City, Utah, almost certainly dating to the late 1860s or early 1870s when Charles Roscoe Savage and George Martin Ottinger were actively documenting scenes along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor through Utah and Wyoming. The mount is a distinctive mint green card, a color associated with Savage & Ottinger productions of that era. The view looks up into the steep-walled canyon, with jagged granite spires rising against an open sky and dense conifer and broadleaf vegetation crowding the rocky slopes.

In the foreground a shallow, boulder-strewn stream cuts across sandy ground, and at least four figures are visible gathered along the near bank to the left. A covered wagon with large spoked wheels occupies the right edge of the frame, its canvas top partially visible, grounding the scene firmly in the overland travel of the period. A tall, isolated fir tree anchors the center-left composition against the sheer canyon wall behind it.

Savage and Ottinger operated the Pioneer Fine Art Gallery two doors above the Salt Lake City Post Office and marketed views in Utah, Idaho, and Montana as well as scenes along the U.P.R.R. Weber Station was a key stop on the transcontinental railroad in Weber Canyon, Utah, making this view part of a well-documented commercial series aimed at railroad tourists and collectors.
