Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Hôtel de Ville dominates this albumen stereoview, captured from an elevated vantage point at street level along the Seine embankment, likely from the Pont d'Arcole or its approaches. The image belongs to the "Paris Instantané" series, a celebrated suite of stereoviews distinguished by fast exposure times that allowed the streets of Paris to be recorded with live figures in motion. The yellow mount carries no photographer's imprint, though the "Paris Instantané" label is consistent with the work of several French stereoscopic publishers active in the 1860s. The inscription on the reverse dates the card to June 1868.

Pedestrians in full Second Empire dress crowd the foreground railing, women in dark crinolines and a child in white visible among the figures. A horse-drawn omnibus rolls across the cobbled square before the building, its imperial passengers seated on the roof. Gas lamp standards line the broad plaza, and the elaborately carved Renaissance Revival façade of the Hôtel de Ville fills the middle ground, its mansard roofline, corner pavilions, and richly ornamented arcaded ground story rendered in fine detail.

The building depicted here is the original Hôtel de Ville, which was burned to the ground by the Paris Commune government in May 1871, just three years after this photograph was taken. It was rebuilt between 1874 and 1882 by architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes, with the new neo-Renaissance façade closely modeled on the original. This stereoview therefore preserves one of the cleaner street-level documents of the building as it appeared in the final years of the Second Empire.

Reverse bears a printed label reading "PARIS INSTANTANÉ. / HÔTEL-DE-VILLE." (Paris Instantaneous Views. / City Hall.) and a manuscript inscription in ink reading "T. R. Clapham / June 1868." The number "No 16" appears in red ink on the left edge of the recto mount.
