Albumen stereoview group portrait depicting the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee, issued under the auspices of the American Missionary Association. The image shows a formally posed studio group of African American men and women arranged around a small table and seated furnishings, dressed in contemporary late 19th century attire. The mount identifies the group as “Jubilee Singers, Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn.” with the credit “Negative by Black.” The photograph likely dates to the 1870s to early 1880s based on dress and mount style. The Fisk Jubilee Singers were organized to raise funds for Fisk University and became internationally known for performances of spirituals and concert music. Stereoview portraits such as this were produced for supporters and audiences as commemorative images connected with their tours. Orange mount with printed title on the verso reading “American Missionary Association. Jubilee Singers, Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn. Negative by Black.” No photographer’s imprint visible beyond the printed credit.
