Capt. Jack's Cave with Modoc stone fortifications along the ridge top is the subject of this albumen stereoview, numbered 2511 in Louis Heller's "Stereoscopic Views" series published from Yreka, California. Heller photographed the Lava Beds and surrounding Modoc War sites in 1873, and this view is documented as part of that campaign series, with copyright registered that year with the Librarian of Congress in Washington.

The view looks westward from within or just below the cave entrance, where layered volcanic basalt columns rise in jagged horizontal strata to a broad rubble-strewn slope above. Along the skyline, a dense, hand-stacked stone breastwork runs the full width of the frame, its irregular courses of dark lava rock clearly deliberate rather than natural. Sparse scrub brush grows between the boulders on the slope, and deep shadow pools beneath the overhanging cave lip in the foreground.

Captain Jack, known in Modoc as Kintpuash, led his band in a five-month resistance against U.S. Army forces from these lava-bed strongholds before surrendering in June 1873. The cave and its fortifications became among the most photographed sites of the conflict, and Heller's series remains the primary visual record of the Modoc War.
