Apache men, women, and a child are depicted standing waist-deep in a shallow river in this albumen stereoview by J.C. Burge, Globe City, Arizona, produced circa 1883 to 1884 as part of his "Views of Arizona Scenery and the Apache Indians in their Native Wilds" series. The orange mount carries a handwritten caption along the lower border reading "Bathing in the Gila" or similar, partially legible.

This view corresponds to the titled entry "The Apaches Bathing" documented in Burge's known series. Eight figures are visible in the water, ranging from a young child at front left to adults standing at varying depths. The central standing male figure wears a cloth wrap and a fabric headband and faces the camera directly with hands on hips. Two women seated in the shallower foreground wear bead necklaces. Three additional males stand at right, one wearing a shell or bead necklace. Dry scrub brush and a low earthen bank fill the background.

Burge operated out of Globe, Arizona Territory, and produced his "Views of Arizona Scenery and the Apache Indians in their Native Wilds" series on orange, yellow, and gray mounts circa 1883 to 1884. His work is held in the National Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian Institution, and the bathing subject is among the most recognized views in the series.

The reverse is printed: "Views of Arizona Scenery and the Apache Indians in their Native Wilds. Photographed by J.C. Burge, Globe City, Arizona."
